Daktronics Acquires XDC's MicroLED Tech and Talent
Daktronics bolstered its MicroLED capabilities by acquiring intellectual property, equipment, and key personnel from X Display Company on December 23, 2025.
Daktronics Expands MicroLED Prowess with XDC Acquisition Daktronics announced on December 23, 2025, that it has acquired the intellectual property (IP), equipment assets, and technical expertise from X Display Company Technology Limited (XDC) to significantly enhance its MicroLED and MicroIC capabilities. This strategic move integrates XDC's proprietary technologies in mass-transfer processes and MicroLED fabrication directly into Daktronics' product development pipeline. The acquisition is poised to enable the creation of advanced display solutions featuring ultra-fine pixel pitches, crucial for next-generation large-format video walls and commercial displays [1, 2, 7]. Strategic Integration for Advanced Display Solutions The acquisition equips Daktronics with specialized equipment essential for the development of MicroLED and MicroIC technologies. Furthermore, Daktronics has integrated fifteen key employees from XDC, bringing with them deep expertise in mass-transfer, MicroLED development, and MicroIC design [2, 4]. This infusion of talent and technology is intended to differentiate Daktronics across all business segments and represents a significant step in its product innovation strategy aimed at accelerating growth and strengthening its competitive position. MicroLED technology offers inherent advantages over existing display technologies like LCD, including higher brightness, enhanced contrast, greater energy efficiency, and a longer lifespan [1, 5]. Deepening a Long-Term Partnership Daktronics has been an investor in XDC since 2020, a relationship that has helped accelerate XDC's development of MicroLED capabilities and applications [1, 2, 6]. This acquisition builds upon that existing investment and collaboration, solidifying Daktronics' commitment to advancing display technology. According to Futuresource, a global market research firm, the Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) market, which encompasses a segment of MicroLED, is projected to reach $12 billion by 2029 [7, 10]. Daktronics Interim President & CEO Brad Wiemann stated, “We believe this move further strengthens our competitive position and will allow us to provide current and future customers globally with the next generation of display technology” [2, 4]. Implications for the Display Market The integration of XDC's technologies is expected to allow Daktronics to offer advanced solutions with improved performance and cost-effectiveness, particularly in the high-volume, medium-sized commercial display market [5, 13]. This strategic acquisition is also seen as a move to reduce reliance on Asian manufacturing and mitigate tariff exposures by leveraging near-shoring capabilities, potentially creating a significant margin advantage [13]. The acquisition is intended to bolster Daktronics' offerings for both large-format NPP products and smaller volume, medium-sized display opportunities [7].
