Daktronics Acquires XDC MicroLED Tech and Talent

Daktronics has acquired X Display Company's MicroLED intellectual property, equipment, and key personnel, significantly boosting its advanced display capabilities.

Daktronics Bolsters MicroLED Capabilities with XDC Acquisition Daktronics announced on December 23, 2025, that it has acquired the intellectual property, equipment assets, and technical expertise of X Display Company Technology Limited (XDC). This strategic move integrates XDC's proprietary technologies in mass-transfer processes and MicroLED fabrication into Daktronics' operations, aiming to enhance its offerings in large-format video walls and commercial displays. The acquisition also includes specialized equipment crucial for the development of MicroLED and MicroIC technologies, along with the integration of 15 key XDC employees possessing deep expertise in these specialized fields. This acquisition is a significant step for Daktronics, which had been investing in XDC since 2020 to accelerate the development of MicroLED capabilities and applications. MicroLED technology is recognized for its superior brightness, enhanced contrast, greater energy efficiency, and longer lifespan compared to existing technologies like LCD. Daktronics Interim President and CEO Brad Wiemann stated that this acquisition will further strengthen the company's competitive position and enable it to provide customers globally with the next generation of display technology. The acquired intellectual property includes XDC's technologies for advanced display solutions with ultra-fine pixel pitches, a key area for modern large-format video walls and medium-sized commercial displays. The specialized equipment will support the ongoing development of displays incorporating MicroLED and MicroIC technology. The integration of 15 XDC employees brings critical knowledge and experience in mass-transfer and MicroLED development, reinforcing Daktronics' in-house technical prowess. The Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) market, which includes a segment of MicroLED technology, is projected to reach $12 billion by 2029, according to market research firm Futuresource cited in the press release. Daktronics anticipates that MicroLED technology will provide higher brightness and improved viewability for outdoor displays, offer flexibility for cost-effective solutions in lower-volume applications, and enhance supply chain stability. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Daktronics to differentiate itself in a competitive market and to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced display solutions.
